Every implement gets a score from 0 to 100% built from five factors, which maps onto the 5-point rating shown on the site (a 0% score would be 1.5 stars; a perfect score, 5). Each factor is scored against fixed reference points, not against the other products in the list, so adding a new model never moves another model’s rating. Implements are grouped by kind (flail mowers, rotary cutters and finish mowers, snow blowers), and the scale for price, width, capacity and features is set for each group. Warranty uses one scale in all groups.
| Factor | Measures | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Price | price per inch of working width at the cheapest linked store | 30% |
| Width | cutting or clearing width | 15% |
| Capacity | thickest material cut (mowers); impeller diameter (snow blowers) | 20% |
| Features | offset mount, hammer blades, quick-hitch fit, protected driveline and similar | 25% |
| Warranty | warranty length | 10% |
Where the numbers come from
Working width, tractor horsepower, hitch category, cutting capacity, features, weight and warranty come from the listing at Amazon, which for most makers is the maker’s own text, and from a maker’s page where it publishes one. Prices are checked at Amazon, and the price used is the one at the store the page links to.
The factors
Price is the price per inch of working width, on a log scale, so halving the price always counts the same. Flail mowers: $80 per inch scores zero and $18 full marks. Rotary cutters and finish mowers: $70 and $20. Snow blowers: $60 and $30.
Width is the cutting or clearing width in inches. Flail mowers: 37 in scores zero and 72 in full marks. Rotary cutters and finish mowers: 48 in and 72 in. Snow blowers: 48 in and 88 in.
Capacity is the thickest material a mower cuts or mulches in one pass, in inches, as the maker states it. Flail mowers: 0.5 in scores zero and 3 in full marks. Rotary cutters and finish mowers: 0.75 in and 2 in. For snow blowers it is the impeller diameter, 20 in for zero and 26 in for full marks.
Features add up the parts that protect the tractor or widen what the implement does. Flail mowers: an offset or side-shift mount 25%, forged hammer blades 30%, a quick-hitch fit 25% and a shear-bolt or slip-clutch PTO shaft 20%. Rotary cutters: a slip-clutch PTO shaft 30%, a cast-iron gearbox 30%, a quick-hitch fit 20% and chain or rubber debris guards 20%. Snow blowers: a quick-hitch fit 30%, a shear-bolt protected auger 25%, adjustable skid shoes 20% and a chute that turns from the seat 25%.
Warranty is the maker’s warranty: none scores zero and 3 years full marks, so 1 year scores 33%.
What isn’t scored
Tractor horsepower, hitch category, weight, cutting height, blade count and how heavy the deck steel is are listed but not scored. Build quality matters most and makers do not publish it in comparable terms; weight is the closest stand-in, and listed weights are often shipping weights or are copied between sizes.
Missing data
If a figure isn’t published, that factor gets the neutral middle score (50) and the product page marks it as estimated. Features are neutral only when none of them is published; otherwise a feature the listing doesn’t mention counts as missing from the score. The exception is warranty: a maker that doesn’t publish one gets no warranty counted, so that factor scores zero and is marked estimated. Most tractor-implement listings publish no warranty, which is why unfamiliar brands can still rank on price and width.
Ties and discontinued models
Products are ranked by score within each group. Discontinued models stay listed but rank below every current model and can be hidden with the “Hide discontinued” filter.
