A flail mower mulches what it cuts, so there is no windrow to rake and little thrown debris. Hammer flails (forged hammers on a heavy rotor) handle brush and saplings up to 2 or 3 in; Y-blade flails, the standard-duty kind, are for grass, weeds and orchard rows and cut only about 0.5 in. Offset ditch-bank models tilt hydraulically and reach 69 to 111 in out from the tractor, which needs a hydraulic remote. Ten of the 22 mowers say they do not fit a quick hitch, so check your hitch before ordering. Tractor size matters: a 72 in flail wants 40 hp or more.
