A tankless heater rated 68,000 BTU for endless hot water in an RV that has the cutout for it.
Amazon $299.99Most RVs heat water with a propane tank heater in a square cutout on the outside wall, usually 6 or 10 gallons. When it fails, the usual fix is a swap into the same cutout, and a growing number of owners switch to a tankless unit that fits the same opening. These rankings compare what the makers and sellers publish on the same terms.
Tank or tankless is the first choice. A tank heater stores 6 to 12 gallons and recovers on propane or, on the gas-electric models, from shore power. A tankless heater has no tank to run out, but it needs 12 V power for its fan and a gas supply that can feed 40,000 to 70,000 BTU.
Cutout and door decide whether a unit fits. Check your cutout size, door size and whether the unit is for a 6, 10 or 12 gallon opening before you buy. Replacement tanks, cores and parts aren’t ranked.
Published figures are thin for several brands. Many sellers give a BTU rating but no recovery rate, amp draw or warranty, and the product page says so when that’s the case.
