Best Benchtop Milling Machines Ranked

31 benchtop and small floor-standing metal mills, scored on price, table size, motor, features and warranty.

Last updated: November 4, 2026

A benchtop milling machine holds the work in a vise on a table that moves in two directions under a spinning cutter, so it cuts flat faces, slots, pockets and accurately placed holes in steel, aluminum and brass. These rankings cover manual mill-drills and bench mills that plug into a household outlet or a 220 V circuit: Precision Matthews, Grizzly, Little Machine Shop, JET, MechMaxx, Yokoma and others. CNC mills, full knee mills and combination lathe-mills are left out. If you also need to turn round parts, see the benchtop metal lathes, which are scored the same way.

Table size is the first choice, and it sets the group a machine is ranked in. A mini mill has a table about 20 in long or less and suits small parts. A mill-drill with a 20 to 30 in table is the usual home-shop size. A large bench mill has a table over 30 in long and often weighs 500 lb or more.

Spindle is the second. An R8 spindle takes standard collets and end mill holders, which is why it earns credit in the score; MT3 and similar smaller tapers limit tooling. A brushless or variable-frequency motor gives smooth speed changes without moving belts, and a tilting head cuts angles without tilting the part.

Readout and feed are the third. A digital readout shows table or spindle depth position, which saves measuring and trial cuts. A power feed moves the table at a steady rate for a better finish. Both are sold separately by several makers, so check what the listed price includes.

Many mills sold online are unbranded clones with no maker spec page. Only models with a published model number and a maker or listing spec page are included, and a figure the maker doesn’t publish is marked, not guessed. Rigidity and accuracy matter most, but makers don’t publish them in a comparable way, so they aren’t scored; weight is listed, and a heavier machine of the same size usually chatters less.
