Best Pressure Canners Ranked

14 stovetop and electric pressure canners, scored on price per quart, warranty and convenience.

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Pressure canning is the method the USDA recommends for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meat, poultry and fish, and a pressure canner is a different tool from a pressure cooker. These rankings cover stovetop canners, which sit on a burner, and electric canners with their own element, all sold to preserve food in jars. Pressure cookers sold only for cooking, and water-bath and steam canners, aren’t ranked.

Size comes first, and the ranking pages group canners by liquid capacity: under 16 quarts, 16 to 22 quarts and 23 quarts and up. The jar count matters more than the quarts. A 23-quart Presto holds 20 pints or seven quarts, and a 16-quart holds 10 pints or seven quarts. Jar counts are the maker’s own and differ by jar shape: wide-mouth jars fit fewer, and some pint counts need double-stacked jars.

Seal decides how much upkeep a canner needs. Most canners use a silicone or rubber sealing ring that the makers say to replace every few years. All American’s cast aluminum canners seal metal to metal and have no ring to replace.

Control is the other split. A stovetop canner needs you to adjust the burner to hold pressure, watching a dial gauge or listening to a weighted regulator. Electric canners, such as Presto’s digital models and the Nesco, hold the temperature themselves.

Cooktop matters if you cook on glass or induction. Presto’s 01784 has a stainless steel clad base made for induction. Granite Ware advises against glass stovetops, and All American publishes gas and electric as its heat sources.

Makers describe their canners as meeting USDA guidelines; the USDA does not certify or approve home canning equipment.
